Furniture Design Schools in the United Kingdom

Scotland is the home of The Chippendale International School of Furniture. The school offers an intensive 30 week course, complete with hands on work experience and off campus visits to museums and wood working facilities. If you live in Scotland or other areas of the UK, this may be the school for you. Chippendales only offers certificates of completion, but their hands-on coursework is extensive and challenging. London’s Kingston University offers a degree in Product and Furniture Design. The school gives out a bachelor’s degree in the field. Hands-on experience in the field is provided. The school offers traditional furniture design courses in addition to digital computer skills for furniture design.

Furniture Design Schools in the Rest of Europe

The Florence School of Design international offers an intensive four week course in furniture design. During the short course, students study all aspects of furniture design. However, the schools concentration is on Italian furniture styles and makers. For student wanting to work in Italy, this four week certificate might be the perfect course. The degree is highly regarded in Italy. Sweden offers a course at the Linnaeus University. The course is offered through the School of Design. Competition is fierce for this program as it is tuition fee. However, fees are charged for supplies, plus a student needs to budget for living expenses. Courses concentrate on Scandinavian furniture design. Plan on a semester of study.

Furniture Design Schools in the United States

When searching for the best furniture design schools in the United Stated, the Savannah College of Arts and Design reappears time and time again. The furniture degree is offered through their school of Building Arts. The schools education covers the entire furniture making process from the conceptual ideas to marketing of the finished product. Both bachelors and masters degrees are offered. Another United States School that specializes in furniture design is Northern Michigan University. The school’s College of Arts and Design offers degrees in Furniture Design. The woodworking process is the focus of their major. At present, the school only offers a bachelor’s degree in the field.

Here’s a list of the best and best-known designers from the UK. London serves as the fashion capital of the United Kingdom and rightly so. With so many talented British designers, all eyes are on British fashion.

Alexander McQueen

Lee Alexander McQueen is one of the greatest British bespoke tailors in recent memory. Creating unique individual designs was his hallmark, as much as his controversial runway shows. He won the British designer of the year award five times, the latest being in 2011. The fashion world lost an icon in 2010 with the passing of Mr. McQueen.

Matthew Williamson

Mr Williamson specializes in bright fabrics and ethereal styles. His fashions sometimes take on an Indian feel, some say from time he spent there. He recently ventured into mens designing as well. In 2008, Matthew won the Red Carpet Designer of the Year award at the 2008 British Fashion Awards.

Vivienne Westwood

Some call this fashion designer icon the Queen of Punk. With the rise of punk rock in the late 70′s, Ms Westwood , along with other designers, created the classic punk outfit style. Since, her designs have graduate to clean lines and voluminous use of various fabrics. She has been awarded the British designer of the year award on three occasions.

Paul Smith

Some call Paul Smith the king of British menswear fashion. He let the design world know that patterned shirts for men could prove fashionable. Another addition to British fashion that Mr Smith added was accessories for men, including wallets, cufflinks and colorful ties. After perfecting his menswear line, he ventured into women’s fashions and has garnered just as much popularity in that arena. His latest honor was winning the 2011 British Fashion Award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion.

Christopher Kane

Although of Scottish descent, Mr Kane now bases his fashion design business in London. His fashion designs are geared toward the younger generation. Several years ago when beginning his fashion career, he experimented with neon colors. Mr Kane still loves to use bright colors in his collections. His designs feature mini dress styles accented by bright designs and accessories. He recently was awarded the British New Establishment Award for his modern and creative fashion offerings.

Technological advances and the increase in use of social media websites has increased the requirement of web designers to keep up with demand. For many people, the internet has become their main source of information and most used form of technology. Not only does this lead to a greater number of people wanting to have websites built for them, it also creates a greater interest in computers and the desire to become a web designer.

Training

Simply having some computer knowledge is not sufficient to be able to call oneself a web designer, which requires a mixture of creativity and skill. When undertaking the task on a professional basis, it is necessary to have credentials to be able to demonstrate skill and ability to potential clients.

Specialism

There are a range of codes that are required during the course of designing a website, such as Javascript, CSS and HTML. It will be necessary for someone seeking to be a web designer to determine what they intend to specialise in. This step will help to determine what level of expertise is required, which will govern what type of education and training is required. Consider the type of instructions desired as part of this decision process, as ability will often determine the type and quantity of work that will be available.

Experience

As in many professions, employers are often keen to discover what experience you have. However, a newly qualified web designer will not have this. In order to get past this obstacle, it is a good idea to offer to create websites for friends and family who show an interest in having a site of their own. Even though this may be undertaken without the consideration of any fees, it should still be included on a CV as experience. This is also the case with any websites that were designed for the sake of experimentation. Make sure to keep a note of the domain names of any designed websites.

Employment

Some companies will require the services of a web designer, but the job will be more extensive than design and will also include maintenance of it. However, jobs can be difficult to obtain due to the level of competition. The alternative is to consider working as a freelance web designer, which will allow greater control over the types of job that are accepted.

London, Paris, and Milan – these city names are the top three that are associated with the fashion industry. The schools which have created the awe inspiring designers of Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and other fashion greats have all been in Europe. These facts make it easily understood that Europe is the heart of the fashion world, and individuals who wish to learn from the best should attend these educational programs.

Polimoda International Institute of Fashion, Design & Marketing

Established in 1986 and based in Italy, it is a member of the International Foundation for Fashion Technology Institutes. It has strong affiliations with the University of New York and other schools. Programs provide internationally recognized knowledge and skills in many areas involving the fashion industry.

Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design

This location is one of six colleges that comprise the highly regarded University of the Arts London. It was established in 1989, but was the result of a merger of two much older schools dating to 19896 and 1854 respectively. Boasting an impressive alumni which has graduated from this premier school of fashion design, it has earned the world recognition it enjoys. Members include such well known names as Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, and John Galliano.

Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne

Established since 1928, this is the most prestigious location in France to learn and develop the knowledge and skills as a fashion designer. Greats such as Laurent and Valentino have studied at this Parisian school, giving the school well deserved recognition and status in the fashion industry.

Beckmans College of Design

Established in 1939, this is a quiet school which offers only three programs fashion, design, and visual communication. Its location in Sweden makes it easily accessible and the main focus for the regions in Northern Europe.

Making a Decision

When deciding upon a college to develop skills as a fashion designer, a person should thoroughly examine every aspect of what the program is offering. Some of these colleges offer only undergraduate or graduate opportunities. Also to be considered is the need for continuing education since all of these schools do not offer this to its graduates.

A wide range of people require the creation of a website for different purposes, from individuals to companies, which will make web design abilities necessary. Whether an individual chooses to undertake the process themselves or wants to understand what a web designer will do on their behalf, it is a good idea to have some basic knowledge in web design.

Purpose

The first step is to decide what is required of the website and how it will look, which will help to determine what information it will contain and how many pages are necessary. This will help to guide the steps to follow by confirming the overall size of the eventual website. Undertake this preparation while bearing in mind the intended use of the website, which will help in decision-making.

Template

Once there is a general idea in place about the purpose of the website and the intended look, the next step of the web design process can commence. This is to create a template for the website, which will require the use of specialised software. This allows the user to undertake a wide range of creation and adjustments to the design of the website. During this process, the use of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) code comes into play. This is a type of language that is specifically used for the purpose of structuring text and multimedia documents in relation to each website page. This also creates the ability to link one page to another, ensuring that the end user will be able to navigate the site easily.

Domain

Even before the design of the website is complete, it is possible to obtain the name that will be used for it. Alternatively, it can be acquired after the design has been completed. The website name, which is known as a domain name, has to be purchased – this often takes place after payment of an annual fee. The cost of the domain name will vary depending on the wording and how popular it is, which will include the suffix that is used. For example, a .com suffix is likely to cost more than .org.

Hosting

Besides the domain name, it is also necessary to obtain hosting, which effectively allows space on the internet to display the pages. The template can then be transferred via the hosting to complete the web design and leave the website visible on the internet.

Marketing plays a major part in the sales of all products, even though the purchaser is often unaware that they were affected – when it is done skillfully. There are several ways in which the design of product packaging can help to boost sales, such as by making the item more appealing to consumers.

Clarity

Whether purchasers of a product like to quickly grab it and go or prefer to take their time browsing shop shelves, it is important for it to be clear what they are buying. In addition to the brand name being denoted on the packaging, the best examples will also clearly confirm what goods are within, in the form of images, words or both.

Style

The style used to create packaging helps to boost sales of a product mainly by being eye-catching enough to earn and hold attention. Similarly, packaging that is easily recognizable as being within a certain type, for example, by size or flavor, will make it an easy option for a consumer. This will help to increase sales by improving trust in the product and making it easy to select. A style that is appropriate to the product will also boost sales by fixing an idea in the purchaser’s mind. For example, images of nature on a product classed as healthy will create the assumption that it is nutritious. The sales of high-tech products can be boosted by packaging that is appropriately modern and making it clear what is inside.

Color

With similar products often being grouped together in shop’s premises, the use of color is an important tool in making items stand out. This is especially relevant when the product is competing with other brands. In addition, the color of the packaging will often be associated with the product inside, especially if the packaging is not transparent. Accordingly, a tin of tomato soup that has red packaging is likely to be purchased more than one with blue packaging.

Information

Providing details of information that would be of particular interest to the consumer will help to boost sales. Being able to determine information quickly is important, even if it is often unconscious, and packaging that presents this will be selected to prevent having to look for it. Information that falls within this class can include price, nutritional information and ability to recycle the packaging.
